Tavja is a kingdom contained almost entirely within the Cloudforger Mountains and populated by a rugged, mountainous, warlike people who worship the Norse gods.

The kingdom is a warrior-class, male-dominated society based heavily on slavery; its hierarchy of social castes rises from those lowly slaves up to affluent aristocrats. There is a 10-to-1 ratio of slaves to natural-born citizens. Nobles—the jarl of Tavja chief among them—own beautiful slaves; in fact, the jarl enjoys a near monopoly on exotic slave girls, whom he keeps posed nude around him as striking works of art. It’s a hard life for the slaves and an indulgent illustrative one for the aristocracy.

The Tavja military is comprised of muscular barbarian warriors, and its highest-ranking officers ride Tavjan Lions, fierce winged predators that hold dominant sway over the skies of Chaldea.

In the history of the world, no army has successfully sacked Tavja due to the combination of unassailable mountain heights and winged lions with air superiority. The jarl, Kulbrandr, only bent a knee to Emperor Kordaava because the emperor was a god, wielding the unstoppable Spear of Set. Kulbrandr rightly knew that Emperor Kordaava could easily waltz into the capital city of Danorum and slice the jarl’s throat at a moment’s notice. Once Kordaava was assassinated, however, that threat was all but gone. Brash as the Norse gods he worshipped, Kulbrandr feared no one at this point, not even the heralded Imperial legions. And thus he promptly lifted his middle finger and broke away from the empire as a whole.
