Balathu, is an Akkadian warrior who serves as the leader of Sarva’s sirkatu—that is, Sarva’s servants and sworn warriors, similar to serfs and men-at-arms in a Western European culture. He is a sharp commander, responsible for the discipline, training, and fitness of Sarva’s other sirkatu . And Balathu is a powerful warrior in his own right; at 6’ 7”, he towers over them all.
Balathu wears leather armor reinforced with bronze bands, and he typically carries a spear and shield. He’s also skilled with the sword and composite bow. Each day, a different sirkatu warrior serves as his attendant to help him manage his armor, arms, horse, and chariot in exchange for personal training from the leader of the sirkatu. This daily training has the added benefit of helping Balathu keep his own skills sharp, for Sarva’s sirkatu does not consist of green recruits—they are powerful and experienced men who have trained in combat since childhood.
At the beginning of our story, Sarva and her sirkatu are part of Queen Iltani’s most elite military unit, the Qurubuti Guard. But this all changes dramatically when Sarva attempts to take back what is rightfully hers.
In our Web series, Balathu is played by Jake Ynzunza.
The sirkatu and Qurubuti Guard are historical terms from ancient Babylon.
